G-f fish and chips - Leicester Square

A quick update on the fish and chips scenario for anyone who read about it from Sue in the comments on the 'Tea at the Ritz' posting...

It IS called The Mermaids Tail and it's in Leicester Square. Walked past it the other night and it's massive - on the right-hand side as you walk through the square from Charing Cross Road towards Piccadilly Circus... It's a big 'surf and turf' place and on their menu it definitely says, "Gluten-free batter available on request."

It's £10.50 for fish and chips and mushy peas, so pretty pricey, but what else would you expect in that area!

Going to try and go there soon to try it out, but if anyone else gets there first - please post and let us all know how it is!

I can't believe it! Gluten free fish and chips is a dream come true!! I live in Rome and am very tempted to Ryanair it up to London just to try all your gluten free restaurants...you have a fantastic blog! I just started a blog about gluten free living in Rome too called Off the Gluten Path at otgp.blogspot.com

Grazie!

Hey Cara Mia,

Thanks so much for posting - will put up a link to your blog and can't wait to read all your posts! I lived in Italy for a while and am longing to go back but was worried about being Coeliac in the country that eats the most gluten! I shall book a trip to Rome ASAP and come and try out all their g-f offerings!

My son and I had the GF fish and chips there last spring. The staff and the manager were very helpful and knowledgeable about cross-contamination issues and I felt safe eating their food. It was great, too. Wish we could come back for another meal soon. Also found places through Glu2Go in the Lake District and Scotland.
Cheers

Hi Wendy,

Thanks so much for posting about The Mermaids Tail - great to hear that it was so good!

Always nice when staff know what they're talking about too - sounds like a great place to go for a treat!

Hi Lizzie,

I've only recently been diagnosed as gluten intolerant and have been worried about how I will cope with my new world of dietary restrictions while traveling. I'm coming to London in March and am thrilled I found your blog! Thanks for all the great tips, I will certainly use them!

Cheers,

Fab to know about the GF Fish & Chips...!!

Curious to know whether you found out for sure that they don't fry the chips and the GF battered fish in the same oil they fry non-GF battered fish? I reeaallly miss fish n chips!

Hey Joe,

I didn't actually ask as Wendy (who commented here) said that they seemed extremely knowledgeable when she talked to them when she visited, and also presumed that if they had specifically made a feature out of having gluten-free batter then they must realise that they can't contaminate it by using the same fryer... or at least changing the oil! Also - I was so hungry when I got there that I just wanted to eat! However, I had no problems at all afterwards and I'm pretty sensitive to even the smallest traces...

I will definitely ask next time I go and post their answer...

Thanks for posting!

I am so excited to have found your blog. I LOVE London but this is the first time I will be traveling as a gluten intolerant person. :( I was pretty bummed to hear that the Mermaids Tail no longer serves gluten free fish and chips, so I will have to make do without that on this trip (*cry*) but I do look forward to trying out your other suggestions!

I'm from the southern United States and it's hard enough avoiding all of our glutenous products here.

Fingers crossed!
Thanks for such a wonderful blog!

Hi Rachel,

Thank you so much for posting - I hope you have a great trip - and that you are able to enjoy lots of delicious gluten-free food! Starbucks now normally always have in stock a new gluten-free sandwich (on Genius gluten-free bread) so it's really handy to be able to get that if you need something in a hurry! Plus, there are Starbucks pretty much everywhere...!

My partner has spent a lot of time in Nashville and always said I'd find it really hard food-wise... here's hoping things improve in the future!

Hi, Lizzie,
Do you know if this restaurant is still open. I'd like to mention it in an article on my blog.

Hi there - I think it might be still there - but I think someone posted a comment recently to say that they n longer offer the gluten-free option :(

I know this is an old thread, but just to update you, this restaurant is now called the Grill on the Square and it does still serve gluten free fish and chips in 2013!
